MLK Day

[wrote this on 15 jan but forgot to post it up.. well, better late than never]

i know singapore does not celebrate Martin Luther King Day the way US does
but i'd like to think he's a freedom fighter for more than just the african-americans
in fact, if i were to be born in another era, i'd love to see him with my own eyes
(the other era i'm keen on is the age of the spartans - but that's another story!)

i could've commemorated MLK by putting up "i have a dream" - but we've heard that before!
or i could fly to washington to sing along "we shall overcome" - but i'm too broke..

so i shall just take a moment to give thanks for what we easily take for granted
and to remember that the fight is far from over!!
those demons still haunt kenya, burma, darfur, even paris and many parts of today's world

the old me would wallow in despair - no man can be saved!!
the me in Christ has come to learn - He is the only answer

so i will strive on proclaiming the message that brings true transformation and peace
then one day, in a blink of an eye, he will establish ageless freedom in the everlasting kingdom

and when this happens, and when we allow freedom ring -
when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city
we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children will be able to join hands
and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual:
"free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty we are free at last!!"

If a man hasn't discovered something that he will die for, he isn't fit to live.
-- Martin Luther King, Jr.
